I heart Characters #5 – A minor character who needs their own story

I Heart Characters! is a weekly meme hosted by Dani @ Perspective of a Writer to showcase our book blogger love for characters! Each week she’ll supply a topic and you’ll supply the character. Post on whatever day suits you, about characters from whatever media you love (books, movies, K-dramas, television, manga, anime, webtoons, whatever!) and link up on Thursday so YOU and others can blog hop and share the character love. ♡This weeks topic is:

A Minor Character who Needs their own story

This didn’t need a lot of thinking because I’m going down the Harry Potter route with this as for the last few weeks all I’ve seen is Potter stuff thanks to the two anniversarys. It’s probably not who your expecting but hey it’s me I like to do things differently. This week I have chosenYep Neville Longbottom. Now first if you were to ask any Harry Potter fan who their favourite character is then I hightly doubt many will say Harry. For the main protragonsit he’s not very well liked in the fandom and can seem quite stupid. The reason why I have chosen Neville is because it could have easily been him in Harry’s position and I’d like to read his take on it.He grew up with his Grandma because his parent’s were torchured to insanity (is death really worse than that?) yes Harry was an orphan and I feel for him but Neville’s parent are alive and have no idea he exisits from what I can remember. He gets thrown out of windows to see if he has magic and rather than letting a wand choose the wizard he’s given his fathers wand to almost pass on the legacy. Already I’m inteagued and we’ve not even gone to school yet.Fast forward to Hogwarts and he seems to be the only person who has brought a toad with them (since it’s one of the three animals your allowed to take why were Persy/Ron allowed to take a Rat? Maybe a question for another day) and has lost it before he’s even at the school. Cut to the end of the first year and he’s managed to go from (for lack of better words) a bumbling idiot who doesn’t stick up for himself to someone who is brave enough to fight his friends/roommates to stop them from doing something stupid only to get the bloody full body-bind curse on him from Hermione. At this stage it’s a wonder he’s not scared for life. Luckily Dumbledore rewards him for his effots which I think is a nice cheeky confidence boost for him. From then on he is horrificly bullied for the next 7 years by a man who was supposed to support him on his journey to being a fully fledged wizard. Now I don’t know about you but I think there must have to be some untold story which leads rofessor Snape into being a 13 year old boys boggart. What could he have possibly don’t within the first two years to be this boys biggest fear.*I’m sorry for all the Snape fans out there and as much as I love Alan Rickman I really don’t like Snape*I think Neville is a great character and one which had a lot of growth (especially in the films 😉) I dont think he gets anywhere near as much screen time in the films but when it comes to the Goblet of Fire I like how it was changed to Neville giving Harry the Gillyweed for the 2nd task in the tournament rather than Dobby. I think it shows some insights into other characters interests outside of Quidditch matches. Then there is this pealer

“Oh my God, I killed Harry Potter”

If Neville had been given the attention and the guidence he sorely needed he would have had the confidence to give Harry the Gillyweed and not have this level of reaction. At this point I’ve already written 674 words and haven’t realy got anywhere so lets skip forward to this17 Year old Neville Longbottom who no longer seems afraid of his own shadow and standing up to men and women who have been using magic for a hel of a lot longer than he has but he’s standing up for the cause.I need a book on Neville because although he might not have been the “Chosen One” according to Voldemort he was still the chosen one because he was chosen by Bellatrix on more than on occasion and eventually the rest of the Deatheaters. I need a book on Neville because I want to know how the kid who was afraid of his own teacher faced his fears everyday ad learnt how to stand up to bigger threats. I need a book on Neville as I want to see how he managed to get the respect of his peers and turned himself into a Horcrux killing hero.I want a book on Neville Longbottom because his story deserves to be told just as much as Harry Potter’s.So I might have got a little carried away with this but hey ho never mind. So which minor character would you like to read about? Do you agree we should have more or Neville or is there another character you prefer (I’ll admit now it was a toss up between Neville and Luna? Let me know what you think in the comments

  1. This post on Neville was incredible!! I LOVEEE me some Harry (I didn’t even know he wasn’t that well liked…😶) but there’s just something about Neville having such a horrible background and coming up authentically strong and brave and tough in the end. I wish he was Harry’s BFF rather than Ron, because he was more helpful than Ron tbh. But I’m SOO proud of my precious baby boy Neville and his growth throughout the series. I still wish he and Luna gave it a shot tho 😭😭😭💔.

    1. Ron was too selfish sometimes and couldn’t be the friend that Harry needed and I think Neville wouldn’t have been as selfish. After discussing this with a couple of Potter friends they also suggested Snape and Draco which I also think would be quite interesting. How does a bullied boy become a bully of a teacher? As much as I’d have liked to have seen them together I think Newts Grandson is also a good choice for her 🙂

  2. I think Harry Potter has a GREAT and huge characters who can easily fit this topic and I like the choice you made. I enjoyed the character development Neville went through and it’ll be just AMAZING reading of him again.

Anyway, I posted this topic too in my blog, but be careful, if you haven’t read The Raven Cycle yet, because there are spoilers (I hate spoilers, but I couldn’t talk of the character without spoiling).

    1. Wouldn’t it be good to see others POV’s on Voldemorts 2nd rise to power (or not quite rise to power). I’ve got the first book in the Raven Cycle but I’ve not got round to reading it yet. I’m planning on reading it soon.

    1. I’d be happy with snippets of his POV throughout the years of Hogwarts just like a chapter or two here and there 🙂

  3. This is such a great choice Laura! I think there are quite a few Harry Potter characters that I would love their POV on… I like Carrie’s idea that we see Neville’s POV on his 7th year! That would be too cool to read about events from Neville’s POV for that critical year… and I love what Danielle said about Neville being Harry’s best friend! He would have made a less selfish friend. ❤️ I love books with under dog characters and I’d love to read about him facing his fears as well. 😀

  4. You know what? I love your choice! You are so right and I overlooked Neville far too long. But when the time came he shone! So yes I would read is book. Really well done!
