Book title: Scarlet
Author: Marissa Meyer
Genre: Fantasy, Sci-Fi
Targeted group: YA
I think I realized that I would rather die because I betrayed them, than live because I betrayed you.
I chose this because I really needed to know what happened after Cinder had ended since she got arrested and placed in the Royal prison. I didn’t think I would get attached to these characters and I feel like this is only the beginning. There is a great need to see how this story will play out due to the massive discovery in Cinder.
We start of with Scarlet Benoit whose grandmother has gone missing. The Police have been unhelpful and have closed the missing persons case. She then makes her usual delivery to a tavern I France where she meets a street fighter. She then watches a news report about what happened at the ball with Cinder. The patrons of the tavern aren’t impress at the scenes that have unfolded and Scarlet feels the need to stick up for Cinder and after a heated argument she leaves the tavern.
We are then introduced to a new character that is “captain” Carswell Thorne who is currently on day 228 of his incarceration when a pair of legs comes through the ceiling of his cell. One foot is flesh and the other is a shiny metal. Thorne helps Cinder escape (well more like provides almost a narration while she escapes and then joins her).
The rest of the book follows through three interlinking story’s (Scarlet and Wolf, Cinder and Thorne, Kai and Levana) where we follow them going on separate journeys all to find answers. What’s happened to Grand’Mere. Am I really this person? Is Selene really alive and in Cinder looking for her? Eventually Cinder make a big decision that will not only affect the crew but the rest of the world and Lunar too.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I like how she is bringing these different fairy tail characters together although i’m not quite sure where Thorne fits into it yet but I’m sure this will be covered.
One think I love about this is Scarlet is fierce and not like the red riding hood I grew up on. She knows where she stand and she knows what she wants and god help those who stand in her way. I love her no nonsense attitude.
Wolf on the other hand isn’t exactly fierce. Yes he has the whole wolf pack thing going for him but it’s almost like without Scarlet he’s nothing but a mutated monster and he’s more than that. It just goes to show that you can’t judge a book by its cover. He may look terrifying and can do some serious damage but he doesn’t want to. He will only do so if he is forced.
I love Thorne. I love that he keeps trying to wind Cinder up and then get shot down. Yes I’m aware that if he was real and saw this post his head would need deflating to get out of a door but who honestly doesn’t know someone like this.
Cinder is still on her mission and seems more determined. I’m just glad that she is proving herself to be the heroine of her own story and not letting a man dictate what she can and can’t do.
To be completely honest. I love that we have these two really strong different women who are basically giving the world and the moon the finger. My guess it Iko would join in if it wasn’t for her current predicament.
What did you think of Scarlet? Did you think it complimented the fairy tale or not? What do you think would happen next now they know Cinder’s background?
